A natural pearl begins its life inside an oyster’s shell when an “intruder”; such as a grain of sand or bit of floating food, slips in between one of the two shells of the oyster.

This food or grain of sand often irritates the skin and interiors of the oyster. To protect itself from further irritation and harm; the oyster emits a liquid (nacre); which is called mother-of-pearl. It is, initially one thin layer that cover these grains of sand or food. But that’s not it, the nacre is kept on being emitted by the oyster until it feels the irritation no more. When it stops, the layers of nacre has formed into a beautiful pearl.

I was amazed to learn this and it only pointed to God’s goodness.  Every time an uninvited irritation invades our lives, we have a choice to protect ourselves from its vulnerability. And, that is through the Word of God. We need to emit the Word through prayers, brokenness and humility until one fine day we see a beautiful pearl formed from the misery we have faced. If we were to retaliate, give up and call for revengeful justice, we would never see what it takes to see His beauty unfold.

We miss out so much when we don’t want the suffering, the irritations, the insults, the rejections and the denials. Why? Because it’s the ascension of the test that brings the bounty of restorations and revivals. Suffering, because of deliberate wrong choices, will return nothing much unless withdrawn completely. But struggling to go through in life with the right choices will always be worth the blessings beyond contain.

So many people wait on blessings that are delayed only because they have failed to yield to the simple (very small) instructions, connections and actions; like what Dr. Bernard Blessing says, “God’s blessings are often wrapped in unattractive packages”. The fun may have to be missed out, the movies have to be ignored, those gathering will need a stop, those struggles will need a yes, those times must be redeemed to learn the Word of God and those tingles of world’s standards and glamour needs to be waved goodbye.

Narrow road isn’t an easy road. Every season of life will have its own narrow testings and irritations showing up. If we aren’t willing to be captured in His love, but by those compromises; then we will never be able to walk on those narrow paths. Relationships matter, but if those relationships don’t provoke you to righteousness you have wasted time, money, energy and heart-aches. And that doesn’t highlight for cutting off, it’s ensuring that your priority is not to sway away in indiscipline.

Knowing where to draw a line to everything this world throws at us, is a key to emitting the liquid like the oyster. If it tolerated the grains and the food, it’s entire self would have been destroyed in pain and no pearls will be found.

Real people will not sweep away with so called popular people, but will stand with people who aren’t extraordinary today, until they become one tomorrow. Just like the first coating of the ‘nacre’ didn’t seem like pearl at all, the consistency of that liquid emitted is to why the end result became massively marvelous.

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time and it hastens to the end [fulfillment]; it will not deceive or disappoint. Though it tarry, wait [earnestly] for it, because it will surely come; it will not be behind-hand on its appointed day” – Habakkuk 2:3

The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. -1 Peter 5:10

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” – Galatians 5:22-23

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.” – Matthew 13:45-46

As all this is shared, I want you to know you aren’t someone who needs to be condemned or feel like not up to the mark. We struggle in disciplining our Christian life. In the initial stages of growth, I always depended on someone to back me up, provoke me into reading and studying my bible, discussing the Word of God and praying with me. It’s okay to partner with someone till you know you have hit a solid ground to yield wholly to the Holy Spirit to motivate you. For when you don’t give up pursuing the righteousness of God, you won’t miss out seeing pearls all around.

  1. I love that quote that ‘Blessings are often wrapped in unattractive packages. It is so true. I can think of several that turned out wonderfully but seemed like a burden.

  2. Oh yes the irritations of life do make beautiful pearls and you can appreciate them all the more when you understand all it took to get to that beautiful pearl.
