Widow’s Worship

And then He turned His attention from the religious scholars to some wealthy people who were depositing their donations in the offering boxes. A widow, obviously poor, came up and dropped two copper coins in one of the boxes.

Jesus: I’m telling you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all of those rich fellows. They’re just giving from their surplus, but she gave extravagantly what she couldn’t afford at all—she gave her all. (Luke 21: 1-4)

With the very little that she had, she managed to come to the temple. Before, dropping her two mites into the offering basket, she would have contemplated on the possibilities of all “what ifs”. But, finally she manages to gather courage and drop of all that she had.

We have no clue how God would have compensated or rather blessed her for her extravagant generosity. But, one thing we know for sure, Jesus took note. He commended her for letting go the last bit which was needed for her living.
Beloved Child, when the Author of Creation is moved by your generosity, all of Heaven has irrefutably come to meet your needs, wants, desires and dreams. A widow probably has no motivation to worship. She has lost the shoulder of comfort she once leaned on. Just having two cooper coins meant that there wasn’t one person to her aid. Yet, she worshipped by dropping off those two coins which chimed a note of adoration to the ears of the Saviour.  Out of abundance any one can sing a song once sang. But, to sing a new song; we must wilfully let go the last bit of ourselves, to which we have chambered all our hopes and trust.
For He gave up His Beloved One for us. Jesus is the SOURCE of Heaven, the Joy of Heaven and the Cherished of Heaven. Yet, for us Heaven gave its all! Even today, God who did not spare His Own Son, is going to pour His graciousness into yours and my life. Isn’t it enough and more of a reason to totally give ourselves over to THIS PRECIOUS LOVER OF OUR SOULS?

“If He did not spare His own Son, but handed Him over on our account, then don’t you think that He will graciously give us all things with Him?” – Romans 8:32

  1. Beautiful reminder for our lives. I’ve thought of that story often… how difficult it must have been to give up the last coins. It was a sacrifice and how hard is it for us to truly sacrifice? Thought provoking post.
