“”I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.” – John 15:1-3
The Word for clean is the same basic word as prune. And us becoming clean in this context happens through His Word/ His Voice.
Pruning/discipline takes place when He talks to us. Bad circumstances in our lives aren’t a form of His discipline. That is inconsistent with the lessons given by Jesus to his disciples. So the unfavorable moments brought on by us, serve one purpose – to turn us a back to a place of listening.
The large fish that swallowed Jonah wasn’t the discipline of the Lord. He ran into that “wall” by his disobedience. The fish brought Jonah to a place of wanting to hear from God.
This doesn’t mean circumstances aren’t necessarily a part of discipline, even then, He simply wants to talk to us to bring about the change in us, that is needed.
A lot happens when He talks and we listen from the heart, thus being empowered to be doers of the Word.
